The coaching carousel

|
| McMillan got a raise in Portland. |
This year there are ten new coaches heading into the 2005-06 season, a number that would be ridiculously high, if not for
the fact that we've gotten used to this sort of thing. The coaching carousel - "You take our old coach, we'll take THEIR
old coach" - continues this year, with the same eye-popping turnover rate.
So when fans complain about coaches bolting for greener pastures and greener greenbacks, we have to have a little laugh.
Yeah, Larry Brown left the Pistons in July, but he wound up with $50 million over five years from the Knicks. When the Sonics
lost Nate McMillan to the Blazers, many in Seattle felt McMillan turned his back on the team after 19 years in the organization.
But, Mr. Nate will be making at least ten million more in the state to the south.
If you think teams show no loyalty, you'd be right - see: Jackson, Phil. And we have the number to prove it.
9
That's the number of coaches who have been with their current teams for at least two full seasons. TWO FULL SEASONS.
Only three of those guys -- Jerry Sloan, Gregg Popovich and Rick Adelman -- have been with their teams more than two seasons,
and Jerry Sloan doesn't really even count, since he'll automatically be coaching the Jazz until he's 159.
